Josie,

I remember that Blomgren afternoon vividly. I think you were wearing that purple-bold-striped (or was it teale) sweater. Within 48 hours I interrogated Josh G about you because I knew that he knew your friend Jen.

Blomgren had that authority destabilizing appeal. You used to spend time there whether or not you were in detention and I used to sit in on his classes even though I never took a class with him. Do you remember the grease paint Sinead O’Connor and Bob Dylan portraits I did in his class?

Well I hope that the mix lived up to the expectations, did the trick, and jumpstarted your adolescent rock and roll heart!

I’m very happy about this mix.

My favorite way to spend detention (in my case, for late arrival to school) was in Mr. B’s art room, hanging out. Which is where I first met you and Josh, or rather got your attention, because of course i knew who you were. Which is where I preferred to hang out after school even without being required to. What kind of crazy non-punishment was that?? Typical softy, liberal, mushy child-rearing… ;)

evan,
one of the great stories, however, i have to make a correction before this goes on any longer.
pearly and the wasteband was fronted by a singer, Pearly Gates. i sat in w/ them as w/ other bands. unfortunately, it would have been difficult to have my own band because of being a mom. anyone, i think i’ll have one more cup of coffer fore i go.

Yes… Good Guys and Bad Guys is still making the cut! Glad you’re out there listening in radio land.

I don’t know the Equals but cannot wait to check them out. Yay thanks for the tip. I tell ya tapping the undiscovered old music is really my favorite thing the past few years.

Some parties that I came late to (in the past decade) which fulfilled the promise of checking one’s pop music blind spots:

Wire – Pink Flag
70’s British punk. Ramones fast with Clash level musicianship… so good.

Nina Simone – I don’t know how I missed her but I am so happy that i will be listening to her from now until I depart this mortal curl (sp)

Brian Eno’s 1st two albums (Here Come The Warm Jets & Taking Tiger Mountain By Strategy)
Better than Bowie. Sorry. needed to be said.

Veedon Fleece by Van Morrison – It’s like the sequel to Astral Weeks. Jazzy meandering vocals with very few hooks that make for a tres existential Irish trip.

another note: I’ve recently been introduced to The Equals — a great late 60s British band, that penned a few of the songs that became Clash hits, like Police on my Back. Are you familiar with their albums? Another one: I just discovered Slade. Who knew that Cum On Feel The Noize was not a Quiet Riot original?? :)
