O’Pinionated Mix – November Covers “Extraordinary Renditions”

In the spirit of the season and the eternally interconnected greater family of artists, here is another mix of my favorite cover songs.  Plenty of unpredictable treats to be found here from the twin bookends of Pixies, Leonard Cohen and Metallica, to Chili Peppers’ Jon Frusciante giving Bad Brains the acoustic treatment, to  Alt-Hippy renditions of two classics by Neo-Soul Divas Sade and Eryka Badu.  I was actually in attendance, to see Gillian Welch spontaneously decide to dive into  the Jefferson Airplane number, when, upon feeling delirious from air-travel and sleep deprivation, she told the soundman to boost her reverb, at Newport Folk in 2009.    Also Beck and MGMT performing Leonard Cohen, by way of Newcleus, is one of my favorite whacked-out recordings ever and after hearing Jeff Tweedy’s acoustic, mournful take on Blondie, I can never hear the phrase “fade away and radiate” the same way.  After the jump, I have provided the full playlist as well as links to my XMas Covers mix from 2 years ago as well as my Bob Dylan tribute/mash.

2 Bougie 2 Strong Mix – Chinese Jeep Beats and Bayonet Blues

Okay, it’s Hip-Hop time. I hope ya like.  Oddisee is represented big-time on this mix because he has been my most consistent go-t0 artist for the past 3-4 years.  So yeah, he gets a track, an instrumental, and his super-group Diamond District gets a track too.  Hell, if you want to count Oddisee affiliates Mello Music Group, Finale, Has-Lo and Stik Figa have all been collabos, so you can see why I’m giving him MVP status here.  I also caught him live at the Middle East last week and it was outstanding– skills, showmanship and he played with a whole band of funk and rock cats (some of whom were probably twice Odd’s age).

For the rest of it, I’m just trying to stay funky in the days of stressful electoral countdown.  Also, dig the sample I added to the beginning of the mix from the counter-culture comedy classic, Putney Swope.  Enjoy … the drum!

O’Pinionated Mix – Summer Pop #15

“Now I know how Joan of Arc felt… as the flames rose past her Roman nose and her walkman started to melt…”  Okay, so for most folks a youthful game of beachfront volleyball or a droptop convertable en route to a picnic may not be the first images that come to mind, when you are asked to set visuals to the lyrics of The Smith’s “Bigmouth Strikes Again”.   But I think if you click on my latest with an open  mind, you just might be seduced into my eclectic vision of what constitutes a summer  jam.

Plus, on an autobiographical note, this mix includes a track from The Kinks “Give the People What They Want,” the very first LP I ever purchased with my own money.  Full Disclosure here–  although this is a pretty cool purchase for a third grader, I have to confess they were not the first album in our house that was mine.  I do owe deep gratitude to Sharon, Michael and Kevin for their the valiant tolerance my irrational demand for  the Bee Gees Greatest Hits and the “Grease” soundtrack during my 70′s  “Disco” phase.  The long repressed influence of disco on my tastes can perhaps see there, as evidenced by the inclusion of artists like the Gorillaz, New Order and Santigold.

Enjoy!  Playlist is after the fold.   (Right Click or Control Click to download)

O’Pinionated Mix – Summer Pop #14

Well, it looks like spring is here early.  And so is the first Summer Pop Mix of the Season.!  Jeff the Brotherhood kick it off, and their mix of slightly heavy, always catchy pop-rock is a recent discovery for me,  as are the Clean, a 30 (+) year old Aussie band with an enormous catalog of great tunes.  Otherwise, I hope there are some surprises amid this collection of Summer-friendly tunes from the usual contributors.  This time special shout-out goes to Kat in Scotland, whose tastes were especially influential on this particular collection of head-bobbing-sing-alongers!

2 Bougie 2 Strong Mix – Anne Frank’s Funky Posthumous Proxy Mormon Baptism

Hello all,

It’s been quite a while, but I’ve decided the return of Mixtape Friday should be extra funky with a hip-grooving 2 Bougie 2 Strong installment that includes Jimi, Outkast, Mulatu, Prince, Eddie Hazel and more.  An unplanned celebration of Leapyear Black History month (with a few token caucasians Police, Bjork, etc.) Enjoy!

The name comes from this bit of ripped from the headlines craziness.

Mixtape Friday – Summer Pop Mix #13

Start things of with a tip of the cap to the recently departed.  Amy was certainly a Pop Master and it’s hard to find a weak note in the recordings she gave us. The window was short though and the songs too few, too true.  Other than that first melancholy burst, the third Summer Pop of 2011 is my traditional, all-over-the-map kind of jam– birth, death, pushermen, wild Wilde, gospel and zeus. The whole shebang.  Rock on.

MixTape Fridays – O’Pinionated Mix – Maps and Legends

This one starts off with my current favorite song.  Honestly, I have repeat played Paul Westerberg’s cover of “These Days” to the point of nearly murdering it during the past three months, but I can’t help it.  I love his raw singing on it so much (especially in contrast with the vocal smoothness of the Jackson Brown and Nico versions).

In other news.  I think I have finally found a name for this themed series of mixes, and it is the very one I have given to this mix.   Maps and Legends is, I believe, an apt title not only for this particular set of occasionally twangy, sometimes acoustic, always heartfelt songs, but I think it describes quite well this particular style that goes back to the very first O’Pinionated Mix I posted.  On the page that follows I have linked retroactively to the 5 other mixes that I feel fit in this category.

This one in particular is about as close as I get to country music folks…

(As always you can stream or right-click/control-click to download and the tracklisting is after the jump)

O’Pinionated Mix – Maps and Legends

Some silly statistics about this mix.  It contains:

  • 5 songs with locations in the name (from Randy Newman, Yo La Tengo, Emmylou Harris & The Low Anthem, Ryan Adams and Lucinda Williams) making the Maps and Legends title even more appropriate,
  • 4-5 Covers (These Days, Oklahoma, U.S.A., Asshole, To Ohio and depending on how you count it, Ingrid Bergman)
  • 3 super-collaborations (Billy Bragg & Wilco, Emmylou Harris & The Low Anthem and Paul McCartney is a cowriter and collaborator with Elvis Costello on So Like Candy)
  • 3 songs referencing celebrities (I think)
  • 2 low-key country blues jams from the late 60s (Jig-Saw Puzzle, Oh! Sweet Nuthin’)

MixTape Monday – Summer Pop Mix #12

A new Summer Pop mix means a few things.  You can guarantee that it will be nearly 50% comprised of songs by the artists who are essentially my Summer Pop all-stars.  If you’ve been listening at all (previous mixes compiled here) you know who they are by now The Kinks, Cure, Clash, Prince, Police, Beatles etc.  But then you can also count on the fact that I will happily compensate for my predictable choices of core artists by finding unpredictable complimentary tracks and unexpected juxtapositions which have to feel just right.   (Special thanks here to my stepbrother Ian for hipping me to the Zombies last winter)

Well, I think this one lives up to those standards.  Who knows it might even be a new classic (but that’s what I always hope isn’t it? )

For those of you keeping score, Kim Deal gets the coveted Brian Eno Award this time for her contributions  both as a Breeder and a Pixie.  Also, am I the only one who forgot how crazy and awesome Dave Davies guitar solo in You Really Got Me is?

As always it’s your choice how you’d like to proceed–  Stream here, right click to download, listen blind and be surprised, or follow the playlist after the fold!

Enjoy the sonic summer!
