Mixtape Friday – Summer Pop Mix #13

Start things of with a tip of the cap to the recently departed.  Amy was certainly a Pop Master and it’s hard to find a weak note in the recordings she gave us. The window was short though and the songs too few, too true.  Other than that first melancholy burst, the third Summer Pop of 2011 is my traditional, all-over-the-map kind of jam– birth, death, pushermen, wild Wilde, gospel and zeus. The whole shebang.  Rock on.

MixTape Fridays – O’Pinionated Mix – Maps and Legends

This one starts off with my current favorite song.  Honestly, I have repeat played Paul Westerberg’s cover of “These Days” to the point of nearly murdering it during the past three months, but I can’t help it.  I love his raw singing on it so much (especially in contrast with the vocal smoothness of the Jackson Brown and Nico versions).

In other news.  I think I have finally found a name for this themed series of mixes, and it is the very one I have given to this mix.   Maps and Legends is, I believe, an apt title not only for this particular set of occasionally twangy, sometimes acoustic, always heartfelt songs, but I think it describes quite well this particular style that goes back to the very first O’Pinionated Mix I posted.  On the page that follows I have linked retroactively to the 5 other mixes that I feel fit in this category.

This one in particular is about as close as I get to country music folks…

(As always you can stream or right-click/control-click to download and the tracklisting is after the jump)

O’Pinionated Mix – Maps and Legends

Some silly statistics about this mix.  It contains:

  • 5 songs with locations in the name (from Randy Newman, Yo La Tengo, Emmylou Harris & The Low Anthem, Ryan Adams and Lucinda Williams) making the Maps and Legends title even more appropriate,
  • 4-5 Covers (These Days, Oklahoma, U.S.A., Asshole, To Ohio and depending on how you count it, Ingrid Bergman)
  • 3 super-collaborations (Billy Bragg & Wilco, Emmylou Harris & The Low Anthem and Paul McCartney is a cowriter and collaborator with Elvis Costello on So Like Candy)
  • 3 songs referencing celebrities (I think)
  • 2 low-key country blues jams from the late 60s (Jig-Saw Puzzle, Oh! Sweet Nuthin’)

MixTape Monday – Summer Pop Mix #12

A new Summer Pop mix means a few things.  You can guarantee that it will be nearly 50% comprised of songs by the artists who are essentially my Summer Pop all-stars.  If you’ve been listening at all (previous mixes compiled here) you know who they are by now The Kinks, Cure, Clash, Prince, Police, Beatles etc.  But then you can also count on the fact that I will happily compensate for my predictable choices of core artists by finding unpredictable complimentary tracks and unexpected juxtapositions which have to feel just right.   (Special thanks here to my stepbrother Ian for hipping me to the Zombies last winter)

Well, I think this one lives up to those standards.  Who knows it might even be a new classic (but that’s what I always hope isn’t it? )

For those of you keeping score, Kim Deal gets the coveted Brian Eno Award this time for her contributions  both as a Breeder and a Pixie.  Also, am I the only one who forgot how crazy and awesome Dave Davies guitar solo in You Really Got Me is?

As always it’s your choice how you’d like to proceed–  Stream here, right click to download, listen blind and be surprised, or follow the playlist after the fold!

Enjoy the sonic summer!

MixTape Monday – Summer Pop Mix #11

Allright, let us consider this a wish, a dare or a taunt to the elements and seasons– I am posting my first Summer Pop mix of 2011, in the hopes that it will usher in something more sustained than a brief 2-day hint of mildly pleasant weather.

It’s  asolid entry in the series, with Summer Pop newbies like MGMT and LCD Soundsystem appearing alongside my mainstays like R.E.M and The Kinks.  Of course it follows my usual decade-hopping and genre-spanning requirements and ultimately sets the mood for a  dream beach party or outdoor escapade of choice.  I hope you agree. (As always the full playlist is after the fold and you can right click or control click the link to download the podcast as CD length mp3 track)

Also this time I have loaded links to 10 previous Summer Pop mixes after the playlist so if you like you can stock up for groovy fun in the sun.  (Collect them all and pick a fave:  #2 and #4 remain my gold standards)

O’Pinionated Mix- “A Slow Parade”

Okay.  I’m going to need to come up with a name for this series of mixes, because, accidentally or no, they have undeniably evolved into a series.  This one should fit right in with Lost Verses, Lost Causes, Neverending Math Equation, and Autumn Sweater.  Many  favorite artists from those mixes reappearing with new tunes, like Lucinda, Bob, R.E.M., Petty, etc.  And new cameos among the usual cast of characters by the Vulgar Boatmen, Golden Smog and the Walkmen.

Songs for the Spring thaw, enjoy!

MixTape Fridays – 2Bougie 2Strong Mix “Two 70 Year-Old Ladies”

16 solid electronic, jazz and funk grooves, including several folks (much beloved to my karass) that I have been lucky enough to enjoy live in intimate shows over the years such as Enuma Elish, tUnE-YarDs and Sxip Shirey.  This one gets pretty epic and I feel it’s a solid continuation of the journey kicked off on last May and June‘s 2 Bougie Mixes.

The title is inspired by the brilliant Louie CK quote from this clip on the revisionist denial of slavery by educated white folk.

MixTape Christmas – XMas Covers 2010

Merry Christmas Everyone,

I’m not that much of a Christmas music person, so this mix only really contains one proper Christmas song (though the rude and lovely original is probably  my favorite ever holiday tune).   On the other hand, I do think the mood of the season is captured in this mostly mellow mix of cover songs to warm up your winter.  There are a lot of treats here, from my recent discovery of the Van Morrison source of a Beck sample, to a surprise Prince cover, to a rare Cat Power song that omits the well-known chorus to great effect.

So right or control click to download and enjoy with your nogg or cocoa.  (the Playlist is after the fold)

O’Pinionated Mix – 2Bougie 2Strong #7 “Ukranian Nurse, Amazon Guard”

So my first strictly hip-hop mixtape in a whole year is bookended by two sweetly familiar sounding mash-up creations (by Canadian DJ Tor and Boston’s own DJ BC), but don’t let that fool you, it’s a solid representation of my favorite grooves right now- featuring the lyrically masterful “Balance” by I-EL (of  Tanya Morgan), two Oddisee-produced cuts (Diamond District, Yu), a Big Boi Andre 3000 collabo that didn’t make the new album, and more goodies.  Inspired by the outstanding Black Sheep comeback album “The Black Pool of Genius,” I even concocted a mini Native Toungues reunion in the middle of the mix– and one that includes that rare creature, the hiphop cover song!

Enjoy block-melting beats for  your winterized headphones.

O’Pinionated Mix – “Autumn Sweater”

J.J. Cale and Dylan covers.  Early R.E.M. and catty 90′s Pavement.  Rare Eddie Vedder collaborations and rare Neutral Milk Hotel.   My favorite Stones tune and tracks by new kids Hallelujah the Hills, A.A. Bondy and Jenny & Johnny.  Feels like Fall.
